Behind the scenes: Crafting oak boxes
Posted on February 05 2017
One of our favourite products to make are our solid oak wood boxes. 100% designed and handcrafted in our studio; our oak boxes incorporate all the skills we have picked up over the years, culminating in beautiful works of art!
Read on to find out some of our favourite aspects of the crafting process:
1. Cutting the wood
This is Sam's area of expertise. Using both a table saw and hand saw, Sam skillfully cuts the wood to precise measurements. Sam then hand sands the wood to ensure a smooth, shapely finish.
2. Engraving the wood
Hesta is the engraver of the team! Using a Dremel tool to hand-engrave the wood, Hesta works toward a deep engraved etch, following the contours of the wood to create an elegant effect. The engravings are then finished with a hand-painted infill to achieve that glistening, marbled text effect!
3. The finishing touches
A team effort! After a final sanding a buffing of the oak box, a specialist gloss wood varnish is applied for longevity. Particular care is taken to add an extra layer of varnish to the engraving to add that lasting shine!
